Demystifying the 4Cs: Carat, Color, Clarity, and Cut in Diamond Pricing

5 min readCertified Gemological Advisory
Diamond cut shapes and gemological proportion chart

Established by the GIA, the 4Cs system provides an objective, internationally standardized language to describe and value every natural diamond on Earth.

1. Carat Weight

One metric carat equals exactly 0.20 grams. Because larger crystals are exponentially rarer in nature, price per carat increases significantly at critical thresholds such as 1.00 ct, 2.00 ct, 3.00 ct, and 5.00 ct.

2. Color Grade

Graded on an alphabetical scale from D (completely colorless, exceptional white) to Z (noticeable light yellow or brown). Stones graded D, E, and F command substantial market premiums among Geneva collectors and investors.

3. Clarity Grade

Measures microscopic internal features (inclusions) and surface characteristics (blemishes) under 10x magnification, ranging from Flawless (FL) and Internally Flawless (IF) to VVS, VS, SI, and I.

4. Cut Precision

Cut grading evaluates how masterfully the diamond's facets interact with light. Ideal proportions, polish, and symmetry maximize brightness, fire, and scintillation.
